They left off the copy that said:
When you absolutely, positively have to clear out the art room before the SWAT team arrives.
Also, too, this is a must read by Roy:
“Here’s the meaningful action we should all be taking, were we truly serious about reducing the likelihood of such tragedies taking place going forward,” explained Jeff Goldstein of Protein Wisdom. “On a personal level, get a concealed carry permit, and ignore signs telling you to leave your guns in the car. If it’s concealed, and they don’t have metal detectors, then you aren’t carrying. Until you need to defend yourself.”
Goldstein then started screaming at President Obama: “Michele is not the dietitian to the collective and you are not its avuncular guardian. Give up your own security detail and we can maybe have a talk about restricting gun ownership… you and your regulatory henchmen had better not try to stand between me and my ability to protect my family.. ['Progressives'] want a helpless and compliant pool to manage, the ‘masses,’ they like to call it, and it’s a wet dream of theirs to secure not only all political power in their own hands, but all the policing power as well.” Last summer Goldstein held a fundraiser “to raise the capital for at least one very good and reliable all-purpose rifle, one that I can use for defense, close quarter combat, hunting, and maybe even as a melee weapon.” Guns don’t kill people, but maybe to be on the safe side you should try not to live too near Jeff Goldstein.

Second link is wrong…
Yup; it’s actually Roy Edroso’s Village Voice blog/column thingie.
Thanks. Fxded
How Roy managed to slog through all that crap in order to produce his article is beyond me.
I myself had to skim through most of the last page, because the stupid, it burns.
Holy shit, is that ad for real? So they’re admitting that their clientele is a bunch of men who have feelings of inadequacy who believe they can buy their manhood with a gun?
I’m gonna mount a coupla them babies up on top of my monster truck…
Wee Penus-Americuns are people too, my friend. And Wee Penus-Americuns are wallowing in a Win-Win.
Either Liburals ban assalt weapons and Wee Freedom Lovers get to live out our Rambo/RedDawn/TurnerDiary wet dream and perform the Ethnic Cleansing required to maintain our Freedom
or
Liburals cower in their houses and Freedom Loving Armed Patriots clean up with Extortionalry Home Delivery services.
Your choice.
Of course. Bigger Gun = More Man.
Sorta like Truck Nutz, except more lethal.
The next time this happens (and sadly, so sadly it will happen again) we can be reasonably sure of a few things:
The shooter will be white.
The shooter will be male.
The shooter will have issues with women.
Mancard? Fuck you.
Signed,
A Man
Where can you buy a pair of ‘gun nutz’ that dangle off the stock of the rifle, like the pair you hang from the hitch of your F-150?
Edit: It was only a google away: http://thelightrifle.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Gun-Nutz-194.jpg
Well said.
Victoria Soto died protecting her kids, shielding them, no weapon, 27 years old? Braver, so much more everything, than any of the ‘men’ seeing that ad and then checking their gun rooms (the rooms with the mirrored ceilings and Toby Keith on a constant loop) to make sure their ‘cards’ are up to date.
They like that gun because they can hold it with both hands.
What’s a “melee weapon”? I am serious, I want to know what he means by this.
I read the article at NYTimes about the gun nuts and unauthorized gun ranges that seem to be all over western Connecticut. They like to put an explosive on their targets, so they blow up real good when they shoot them.
It’s as I suspected. What is this gun culture other than a bunch of infantile fools, playing with deadly toys?
The late great Warren Zevon:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHDdqubE7zQ
Yeah, shit’s fucked up.
This is a term used possibly in military forces (which obviously doesn’t apply here) and in guys who like to play shooter games or rpgs and imagine that they’re the manly avatar onscreen. A ‘melee weapon’ is used for close-quarter combat, aka ‘hand-to-hand’. What he means by that is that the gun’s stock should be strong enough to bash in a kid’s head if necessary without sustaining enough damage to make the gun unfireable.
Essentially, it indicates that he’s an immature fantasist who daydreams about being the hero who saves the day and is then fawned over by beautiful women and manly men. Most guys like this (apart from Walter Mitty, of course) I’d expect to be far more likely to scream and wet themselves in times of crisis before fainting or cowering in a closet.
Is that the Klonopin talking in Goldstein’s fantasy? Jeff seems to be one psychotic break away from being another ‘actor’ in the RW war on America.
In all the upcoming discussion of gun safety and (I hope) introduction of appropriate legislation, keep a look out in your favorite media outlet for the appearance of an old player in this game, one John R. Lott. If you’ve never heard of him, lemme tell you, he’s quite the character.
Here’s the link to his Wikipedia entry (btw, if you enter “Mary Rosh” in the Wikipedia Search window, you’ll also get to this site; you can read why in that entry). More to-the-point treatments of this character can be found in many places; I think this one* is a pretty good summation (it’s based on a Henry Farrell post at Crooked Timber).
Julian Sanchez at REASON – back when REASON was only mostly insane rather than entirely nutso – busted Lott on the Mary Rosh thing years ago, but the guy who has really sunk his chompers into Lott’s hide over the years (not much recently though) is Tim Lambert, who for the discriminating masochist has an exhaustive number of posts on this character in his archives.
Given all that is now in the public record regarding Mr. Lott, the fact that media organizations still take him seriously says more about their pathetic nature than anything.
*Special bonus in that boston.com link! Words of support for Mr. Lott from Pink Himalayan Salt Lady!!
He was confronted on CNN (I’m really starting to like Ms. O’Brien):
http://thinkprogress.org/politics/2012/12/17/1343921/cnn-anchor-on-gun-advocates-call-to-abolish-all-gun-laws-families-would-be-stunned/
Excellent! More of this please!
Ah, the sockpuppet gun nut. Now I can place him. Just a light touch of schizophrenia to go with the paranoid delusion.
I’m not sanguine at all about any significant changes, whether legislative or executive – right now in America, freedom of gun ownership is the most important freedom. That’s pretty much an inevitable growth of the idiotic decision that the ‘well-regulated militia’ is merely flowery language and not a proscription.
About all that can be done is try to make the general I-dont-give-a-shit-about-politics public clearly understand that these shootings are the price of absolutely free guns and saving that tax money that would be wasted on mental health. Only when enough electoral pressure is around to let sane people enact law does this sort of thing have a chance of going away. I expect that will only be when enough old crackers die off.
Bushmaster: When all you have is sexual inadequacy, just make sexual inadequacy-aide.
It’s like a blender that also gives you acute, fatal lead poisoning!
I can’t remember where I saw it, but someone noted that the U.S. Constition’s predecessor, the Articles of Confederation, provided context for the “well-regulated militia” bit that is missing in the Constitution.
Item 6 on this list (bolding is mine):
Unfortunately, I don’t think this will offer much help in discussions with gun nuts and the big money orgs behind them. You can expect a bunch of derp in response, probably along the lines of “well, that was a flawed document, which is why it was replaced with something better. So shut up.” But at least this provides much needed context for what the founders were thinking when they put that second amendment into the newer document.
Jeff, talk to somebody. You don’t have to be afraid.
Moar guns less government
Think Deadwood.
Without Bullock
and Swearengen works for Hearst
and grenade launchers on every AR-15
and a 3D printer in every bunker
so, you know, forget that order out of chaos thing
We need a little music
I may, as a mere furriner, have misunderstood but I always understood the various state National Guard units to be the “well-regulated militia” that the Constitution was talking about.
I know they have now been apparently subsumed into the Defence Force abroad but wasn’t that their original function?
I mean, defence and emergency help at state level.
What would have made that interview even better:
“Mr. Lott, or should I call you ‘Mary Rosh’?”
It seems all the cliches are falling into place again. According to this site and others there are only gun nuts on the right and gun snatchers on the left. Until this lets up there will be no meaningful actions to stop or slow gun violence. Like the ‘war on drugs’ a prohibition on guns will only feed a waiting black market. Concurrently the American fetish for guns is embarrassing to say the least and sickeningly murderous at worst. Knowing corrupt politicians will decide this in the end makes me want to curl up hide. I fear the worst…
Your understanding has certainly been the conventional interpretation accepted by sensible folks over the years. But in the past few decades it’s been perverted by the gun nuts and their big money benefactors in order to push their agenda.
Beyond that, a lot of our homegrown yahoos wave around the Constitution like they do the U.S. flag or the Bible, like it’s some token of sacred membership in Team Awesome; humboltblue’s musical link addresses that aspect. It’s highly unlikely those yahoos could even tell you what’s in it. But I suppose it comes in handy when you forget to bring along your Foam Finger.
Do not curl up and hide. Pressure your rep, your Senator, your President. The only cliches I see are the gun nuts on the right like Lott, and those on the left who fear nothing will ever change.
I must disagree with your premise. When Warner and Manchin change their positions, there is a small, but very real, opening for some change to occur:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/lawmakers-focus-on-possible-assault-weapons-ban/2012/12/17/667504b0-4852-11e2-820e-17eefac2f939_story.html
FFS, even Scarborough’s position is “evolving.”
I have a serious question. Are gun owners that go to NRA conventions allowed to carry in loaded automatic weapons with 30 bullet clips? How about loaded pistols? If not, why not? Do gun show people want people with fully automatic military-type armaments walking around in their tents? Any rules there? I’m serious.
This template might help to expedite the blogging process. No reason to get Bogg-ed down in details.
Try this link…
Isn’t that–obviously–what this was all about to begin with? Isn’t powerlessness the common denominator in all of these mass killings?
Here’s my nominee for stupid teaser of the century award; unsurprisingly, it comes from the front page of the NY Times:
“THE STONE
Decline of a Young Man
Even if guns vanished, the specter that haunts our young men would remain.”
Uh, yuh. But OUR F*CKING CHILDREN WOULDN’T ALL BE DEAD!!!
Actually, there are a notable number of cases where the shooter isn’t white, starting with VTech. But a sense of thwarted male power looks to me like a common denominator.
Excellent question. Gotta run, but I’ll be looking for answers to that question over the next day or so. And I don’t wanna hear no nuthin’ ’bout, Well, the hotel and convention center set those rules…
Bushmaster is owned by Freedom Group Family of Companies which is owned by Cerberus Capital Management, L.P.. Cerberus acquired several firearms companies in 2009 and combined them to form Freedom Group. From the Cerberus site:
Here is their senior executive leadership roster, including one J. Danforth Quayle, Chairman of Cerberus Global Investments, LLC. (Among his greatest oratorical hits: “I do have a political agenda. It’s to have as few regulations as possible.”)
Merry Christmas, Dan.
Judson, to your remark about prohibition merely creating a black market — I’m not at all knowledgeable about any of this, but according to Roy Edroso (follow TBogg’s link above) there was a major push in New York City during Rudy Giuliani’s administration for the NYPD to permanently confiscate every illegally-held weapon they came across, and a very significant drop in gun-related crime followed. (OK, Giuliani would’ve been a disaster in the White House, but he wasn’t unmitigated.)
I understand from another comment someone made that something similar happened in Australia – gun-control laws passed in response to a mass shooting (passed at national level this time), resulting in sweeping buy-back programs, destruction of the stuff once in the govt’s possession, and a significant drop in crime.
The raging, intransigent desperation of the OutofMyColdDeadHands rhetoricians and the genuine social-apocalypse-coming paranoids, in which latter group Adam Lanza’s mother counted herself, mindsets which have been furiously stoked by the NRA and the manufacturers for – what? 30 years now? 40? – is enough to make you want to crawl into a cave and pull it in after you, despairing of humanity. But we can’t do that.
Am I the only one who’s noticed the double entendre in “Bushmaster?”
Does that guy have a dick the size of a pencil eraser? Hint: No matter how many guns you own, it won’t add a millimeter to your Johnson.
Shorter Megs;
Hah, you beat me to it. (Jonathan Chait weighs in on her post here.)
EXCELLENT HIRE, TINA!
Does the NRA lobby for the right to carry RPGs, own a tank, own shoulder fired missiles? I mean, if the argument is that a citizen has the right to arm themselves in such a way as to defend themselves against a tyrannical government, then there can be no restrictions against any type of ‘arms’, because military-level arms are the ONLY way to fight off the might of the US. (Not that this would work, but I’m just following the NRA logic). Why not stockpile rockets? When the government is as tyrannical as the Obama Administration, who insists upon the horror of people having health care, is there any alternative to a few tactical nukes in your basement? Would it be irresponsible not to have them?
This is one of their big arguments…we must have the right to arm to fight off the government. Well, to fight off the government, you have to have some big time weapons. What’s the legal argument against ownership of these ‘defensive arms’ and why can’t the argument be extended to automatic assault weapons? I’m serious about this. What are the legal issues? Where is the line drawn and why?
I came upon a child of Rand
She was walking along the road
And I asked her, “Where are you going?”
And this she told me…
I’m going on down to the DC Ghetto,
I’m gonna join in the gentrifiCAtion.
I’m gonna liberate my privilege.
I’m gonna get my Cuisinart.
We are Galtians.
We are helpless.
And we’ve got to send them back to the jungle.
the last few days whenever i see some gun nut frothing and foaming, i say “pencil dick.” these pathetic excuses for manhood are so unwittingly blatant.
Not necessarily white.
Regulate semi-auto weapons just as tightly as full auto weapons are regulated now.
I think it was about 2000 or so, I was road-tripping with my daughter, and for grins we turned on Rush Limbaugh. Some guy came on and told Rush that he absolutely agreed about the rights of Americans to hold weapons, and went on and on, saying he was really worried about the army coming after his rights and stuff. So Rush is agreeing and really getting into the argument, and the guy says that he’ll need a 105 mm Howitzer and a bunch of other artillery. Limbaugh shuts off the mike and rambles for a minute or two and goes to commercials, which are forever. When he comes back, he says that he doesn’t have to listen to that kind of stuff.
by the way, the idiot Scalia says that you can have any weapon you can carry. I think that means RPGs are cool. Also too, stingers.
It’s also not at all a secret that we weren’t supposed to have a standing army. That changed sometime after the War of 1812, but it didn’t seriously take hold until the Civil War.
I actually got into an argument on Twitter with Goldstein on Sunday night in which he was screaming about Obama “politicizing” the tragedy to push his anti-gun policy agenda. I opined that I thought any gun-control legislation in the near future would be driven less by Obama’s political opportunism and more by the twenty 6-year-olds who had just been machine-gunned to death. Goldstein’s response was to snicker that I “don’t know a thing about weapons…he used a semi-auto.” Which I’m sure would be of great comfort to the families of the dead. And that was perhaps the least ridiculous of his unhinged bullshit. Guy is a loon.
There was a shotgun being promoted a few years ago, had the old tommy gun round magazine, something like 120 loads, all fired off in a matter of seconds. Can’t find it on the tubes.
But that suckah will clear a room fast, of 5 yr olds or anyone else.
So, Bogg’s, yer firearms stuff is out of date.
N still the killin goes on and always will.
Cuz this nation don’t really care. And its leaders can’t get erected or profit from caring.
Tell me hoss, how do ya fix THIS one. Gimme some thoughts that are doable, cuz so far, NOTHING is gonna stop weapons use, sales, purchases and well . . . ugly mass killings when the fucking parents can’t even LOCK UP their guns from their kids.
Of course. Ever heard, “Bigger the truck, smaller the dick?” That goes ten times for guns. Nothing strokes a male’s missing masculinity like a big, hard shaft that spurts fiery death upon the world.
The power to kill: It’s almost as good as being respected.
@ # 54….
“There was a shotgun being promoted a few years ago, had the old tommy gun round magazine, something like 120 loads, all fired off in a matter of seconds. Can’t find it on the tubes.”
Maybe the “Armsel Striker” or “Street Sweeper”…..
From wiki…
“The Armsel Striker (also known as Sentinel Arms Co Striker-12, Protecta, Protecta Bulldog, and Cobray/SWD Street Sweeper) is a revolver 12-gauge shotgun designed for riot control and combat.”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Street_sweeper_(shotgun)
Oh hey Scalia! Yea!! Mr. “Reductio ad Absurdum”. Alrighty then. I wanna have my own arsenal of RPGs and Stingers!! I’m gonna go online and find out how to build my own mines to line my front yard with IEDs. Second Amendment. I can do anything because I’m a fucking PATRIOT!!!
Penis? Man card?
1954 called.
