…or rather: it has chosen me.
The flu in all its phlegmy glory has come to Casa Tbogg and the house is like a TB ward with better views. If I wanted to cough like this I would have spent the last forty years smoking three packs a day of menthol goodness. Outside of the chills/fever/sniffling/wracking cough I’ve got such a sinus headache that I can’t wear my glasses for more than twenty minutes at a time, meaning that reading was out of the question and, since I’m the kind of person who can’t have a solo meal unless I have something to read in front of me, this is a very fresh hell indeed. Last night I watched a bunch of Luther episodes on Netflix (okay, i get the Idris Elba worship now) and today was spent flaked out on a couch listening to the sounds outside (the wind, the rattle of palm fronds, a dog barking in the distance, waves crashing on the beach) and staring out the window at the clouds swept by.
So, yeah, it was like a Terrence Malick movie but with more character development.
…and now my twenty minutes of vision time is up, so I’m outta here.
Back soon.

Sorry to hear you’re not feeling well. Must be the fucked up San Diego weather or something.
You poor blind baby.
At least the dogs are big enough that you won’t trip over them…..
Take care. My son just got over pneumonia from this crap. I’m one of the big Idris Elba fans, ever since “The Wire” and loved “Luther”. Not much more to add except drink lot fluids and stay warm. I’ve decide to be a recluse until this epidemic passes.
I’ve been getting flu shots every year that I’ve been teaching. I’ve never gotten sick during the school year.
Until this year. I’m just coming out of it. I’m not going to top your description above other than to say, damn, this is some serious shit.
I hope you are up and around soon but worry that what you have may be some kind of computer virus and that we all may be infected now. That Terence Malick movie may have turned into a Steven Soderbergh film or maybe even the Resident Evil series.
So sorry; feel better. Hope teh puppies appreciate having you around to snuggle with all day.
One recommendation: “books on tape” (What? Did that really age me so badly? Okay, then, audiobooks, if you must, but try them all the same).
Yeah? Well who was it that posted a cottage-thigh-cheese Alaskan-style picture? Huh? Huh?
You may have a widdle runny nose but I have ruptured runny-brain thanks to that horror….
Sympathies all around. Haven’t had it this year (knock on wood) but am old enough to say that have been hit with ‘the serious one’ a couple of times in my life.
Stay warm.
Get sleep.
Drink lots of water…keep a bottle on the nightstand.
Use the timer on the TV so it won’t wake you up later on.
Leave a hall light or a night light on somewhere so when you get up in the dark you can find your way to the bathroom w/o tripping over /stepping on anything (we have cat toys that freely roam, your mileage may vary).
Take care,
The weekend after New Years I thought I was coming down with this flu after being exposed multiple times at work (sore throat w/ swelling, etc.), but there was snow to be skied in Tahoe, and if I didn’t ski it then who would? So I did my duty.
Turns out I was actually coming down with what I hope is my lifetime bout with shingles. But still, let’s think of one’s duty here!
Deepest condolences to Mrs T and the bassets. Oh, yes, you too.
Just remember: take all your meds and it’ll be gone in two weeks; don’t take them and it might take a fortnight. But either way, three days will feel like a month. Relativity is funny that way.
Got the flu shot but still got a 4-week lung gunk thing that’s just finished. Hope you get over yours quicker than that.
Perhaps Mrs. TBogg can read to you. Unless you have a man cold, in which case, all bets are off. Just kidding. Only Republicans have man colds.
Recipes that help:
Homemade Chicken Soup With Loads Of Garlic, Stat.
A recipe for great phlegm-slayer is a cup of boiled water, squeeze fresh half lemon in, add pinch of cayenne pepper, and a teaspoon of Manuka honey (this honey is anti-bacterial). Drink 4 glasses a day.
You must also apply a Dog Poultice, i.e. have at least one basset hound draped across you at all times.
Get well soon!
Sorry to hear it, TBogg. Be well.
I recommend laudanum. Won’t help your symptoms but you’ll be too numb to feel the.
the kind of person who can’t have a solo meal unless I have something to read in front of me
You & me both.
I also like plenty of rest, flu or not. Get some yourself.
Get at least eight hours of sleep, get plenty of fluids (especially chicken soup) and eat lots of stuff with garlic in it (such as chicken soup). Since garlic interferes with iron absorption, you’ll have to up your Vitamin C and perhaps eat a bit more red meat or broccoli to compensate.
Good luck!
This year’s iteration of the flu took my dad, so the flu shot may not be much help.
Homemade chicken soup is probably the best remedy your doctor won’t tell you about. Add extra root vegetables like a parsnips, rutabaga and kolrabi to the stock for extra minerals. And garlic. Lots of garlic. If it does nothing else, it at least keeps away other infected people who are offended.
And also, a packet of citrus-flavored Emergen-C made with hot water, lemon juice, a touch of honey and a shot of Jack Daniels cuts that phlegm. That’s my official excuse for indulging.
Alternative for the non-drinkers: Kam-Wo tea (natural ephedra and black tea w/ Chinese herbs) plus a quarter sized slice of fresh ginger smashed with the side of a dol. This got me through three flu seasons in law school.
Meh. Glenn Beck’s tale of post-hemorrhoid-op terror was much more compelling.
Seriously, tho – hope you’re feeling better soon. I got the vaccine 2 weeks ago so I’m given to understand that I have a 2/3 chance from here on out of escaping it.
Been there, done that.
Get well soon.
Just crap. That’s what real illness is.
Think of it as a rehearsal for dying (we don’t do enough of that, those of us who enjoy basic good health, who are many in this day and age of public health, good hygiene, toothbrushes and ob-gyns), and then enjoy life all the more as you get well. You will get well, and before you know it, the sound of waves and the importuning of bassets will be good again, instead of some attempt at a reminder about something you can’t remember or care much about anyway. (And then you’ll forget that you remembered to appreciate….)
Oh dear Ghu. Been there, done that, hope I don’t get it again. And I had a mild case.
Ugh. Sorry.

Oh, take good care and get well soon, TBogg. The flu will suck the strength right out of you.
“Luther” is outstanding. I’ve watched the entire series twice and am waiting impatiently for the next. Idris Elba is simply amazing in this role, which allows me to forget his embarrassing performance in “Prometheus”. And he was brilliant in “The Wire”, so I guess everyone is allowed a stinker on his resume at some point.
Feel better soon!
So – how are the Dogz doing?
We’ve tried to tell you to wash your hands after clicking through each of those wingnut blogs. As my mother always told me, you don’t know who has handled those. Anyway, stay away from that stuff for now. You’ve got to maintain the will to live! Get well soon.
Did you see “Luther” before or after you got sick?
“Able was I ere I saw Elba.”
Ditto on the chicken soup. I swear by neti pots as well which I discovered in a Balloon Juice thread. I haven’t tried chicken soup in the neti pot, but that may work too. Get well Tbogg. Take your time getting back because there’s nothing going on now anyway.
For the sinuses, get some sudafed, the real stuff they hide behind the counter and you have to sign your life away for, not that PSE crap. If your cough is non-productive (i.e. if you’re not actively clearing out your lungs of infectious crud), beg your doctor for hycodan (hydrocodone) syrup. It stops the cough like a charm. Our family depends on it this time of year.
And you can never go wrong with chicken soup and garlic; bonus anti-vampire properties.
My personal cold remedy/comfort measure has always been Constant Comment tea with lots of lemon and a sweetener of your choice.
Get well soon.
What they said, but also, too – really watch the coughing closely (not that you have much choice). Steam/humidifiers are your friends, but you want to be aware of bronchitis/pneumonia. If the cough is getting better and then starts getting worse again, get to the quack or the ER ASAP. Also, too, uncontrollable coughing fits are a Bad Sign. Don’t dawdle – Pneumonia works fast, as Richie Hayward and Jim Henson found to their and our cost. We depend on those Shakira gifs; don’t putz around here.
Get well soon. My home remedy for illnesses like these is a strong cup of tea with a shot of Rumple Minze 100-proof peppermint schnapps, taken internally whenever possible. It certainly helps with the “get at least eight hours of sleep” part.
Also, find a place to hide from everybody except doggies. It keeps you from exposing others to your phlegmyness, and nobody wants to hear yer whinin’ and coughin’ anyways.
Yet another vote for chicken soup with garlic. And hot tea with honey, lemon and fresh ginger. And a good slug of bourbon added, should the spirit(s) move you. Get well soon.
I rather hope that Teh Boyz aren’t like our kittehs… Whenever one of us is feeling somewhat under the weather they all decide to take turns playing Nancy Nurse and applying themselves like mustard plasters. Our largest cat hovers around 17 or 18 pounds. Teh Boyz? I’m guessing that basset plasters would make it hard to breathe.
Good luck, TB, get plenty of rest. Not to be too negative, but had this last month and it took a couple of weeks to get back to 50% of normal.
We all know we’re talking to each other, right? OUr host is back in bed, with or without “basset plasters.” (my fave quote today so far)
I haven’t had the flu [knock wood, make sign of cross], but my winter allergies are so powerful they trigger bronchitis, and I’m still struggling out of the last of it. Maybe. More energy than even a couple days ago.
Can’t get symptom-free enough toget the dam flu shot.
And boy, do I know that “hurt too much to stand glasses on my nose” feeling. Yuck.
Get well soon.
I’m about as symptom-free as I ever get, but I haven’t been in to get a flu shot. (Slightly higher priorities have been invoked, like antidepressant and bills.)
I do not own stock but was amazingly pleasantly surprised at the recent version of Sudafed. It is listed as one pill last 24 hours and I will testify. Quite pricey but the sinus relief is so worth to me.
Also re Idris Elba, I had seen him over the years but after my first Luther I kept going, I know him from somewhere but where? After months I realized. I re-watched an early AbFab where Patsy and Eddy attempt to hire a couple of male prostitutes. And sure enough, the credits proved once again my visual acuity superiority over my fellow humans.
My go to stuff for this stuff is mucinex. Sucks all the junk out of you like a vacuum cleaner. Also, lime oil. The pure stuff. You can get it at health food stores. It helps the throat.
Clearly, this is Obummer’s fault!!! Jill Stein would’ve kept you phlegm-free.
Maybe someone can cart you up to Casa de Rmoney, and you can hack up some loogies in the car elevator and infect that parasitic family that leeches off America. Lemons into lemonade and all that.
If Marcus Bachman can pray the gay away, maybe he can pray your choices away.
Hope you feel better soon. And uh…”okay, i get the Idris Elba worship now” yup, got it a couple years ago
Sounds like your today was a bit like “La Recherche du Temps Malaise” by Marcel Boggs. Do hope you quickly get well since you and Charles Pierce are my two favorite sardonists
